Job Summary

     Crystal Mountain is pursuing a talented and motivated individual who is looking to help support and execute leading golf course conditioning within the resort industry. The ideal candidate should embody an optimistic attitude to help implement the overall agronomic plan for course conditioning while producing a premium golfing experience for resort guests at Crystal Mountain.

     The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will aid the Superintendent and the golf course maintenance team within all aspects of golf course management. They will help lead and be capable of performing in all maintenance duties including: course set up and conditioning, application of fertilizers and pesticides, mowing practices and processes, irrigation scheduling and repairs, course renovation and construction projects, updated administration duties, management of crew for course conditioning, and compliment the overall vision of the golfing experience at the resort. This position will also be responsible for leading and participating in the snow removal process during the winter months and should anticipate working cross functionally with other departments for constructive resort operations during all seasons.

 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Golf Course Superintendent in directing the activities of all assigned personnel.
  • Determine daily priorities, assign work and supervise personnel to ensure all tasks are completed to the highest standard of quality.
  • Supervise project management and course improvements.
  • Maintain greens to tournament level conditions at all times.
  • Monitor irrigation and coordinate troubleshooting and repair with techs.
  • Inspect courses, monitors the condition and maturity, and evaluates and ensures standards are met.
  • Scout for insect, disease, weed, and other turf/grass pressures; diagnose and treat appropriately under the direction of the Superintendent.
  • Maintain detailed records of all chemical applications; update and file all related MSDS information.
  • Maintain detailed records of daily activities, irrigation operation and repair.
  • Operate all forms of equipment including aerification and top-dressing equipment.
  • Train, direct and supervise all greens staff along with the management team to ensure proper equipment use, work methods and safety standards are met.
  • Monitor employee job performance and work ethic and provide on the job training and coaching.
  • Monitor changing weather conditions and modify operations accordingly.
  • Effectively communicate with all Golf Course Maintenance employees.
  • Monitor work sites to ensure compliance with established methods, guidelines, standards, and procedures. 
  • Work cross-functionally with other departments on property to provide quality guest experiences and produce the “crystal difference” for guests and staff.
  • Embody a confident and enthusiastic perspective for developing a constructive culture within the golf course maintenance team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

Competencies:

  • Minimum two years golf course maintenance experience preferred.
  • Some practical knowledge of irrigation systems and fertilizer/chemical application a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain a Michigan pesticide license within a 90 day timeframe.
  • Clear and concise verbal communication skills.
  • Self-directed and able to maximize use of time, resources and technology.
  • Able to analyze, interpret and present data in various formats.
  • Maintains office, employee and company confidentiality at all times.

Education:

  • Associates Degree or certificate program in turfgrass management or related fieldsrequired.
  • Preference given to those who are interested in or currently pursuing education towards turfgrass management or related field.

Physical & Other Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 75 lbs and frequently up to 50 lbs using proper lifting techniques.
  • Repetitive motion of hands, wrists and fingers for constant pushing, pulling, fingering and grasping in the use of tools and equipment.
  • Must have close visual acuity in order to inspect, operate and repair equipment.
  • Must be able to work outdoors under conditions ranging from extreme hot to extreme cold.
  • Subject to noise and electrical, mechanical, chemical and explosive hazards, use of PPE required to be used correctly.
  • Must be available to maintain flexible schedule to include; weekends, holidays & early mornings.
  • Must have excellent attendance and conduct record for consideration.
  • Must have unrestricted Michigan Class “O” operator’s driver’s license and insurable driving record.
  • Must be able to perform heavy lifting, climb ladders and work in adverse weather conditions. 
  • Computer literacy, clear written and oral communication skills and ability to handle mathematical calculations required.
