POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Hanover is seeking a Director of E&S Wholesale Casualty to join our growing team. Reporting to the Vice President of Hanover’s E&S Casualty, the Director of E&S Wholesale Casualty will be responsible for managing all sales and underwriting functions within assigned territories. The Director will drive team performance regarding underwriting management, achievement of new & renewal business targets and ensuring consistent use and optimization of best practices and tools. They will be responsible for training, coaching, and mentoring underwriters in their brokerage relationships, technical underwriting acumen, underwriting appetite, and account referrals.  The Director will collaborate with Operations and manage underwriter workflows to include proper utilization of tools and reports for efficient book management.

 

  • Manages a team of dedicated E&S casualty underwriters and provides the leadership, mentoring and guidance necessary to build and sustain a high performing workforce in a collaborative team environment.
  • Direct performance management by setting goals, delivering, and receiving feedback, documenting, and communicating constructive performance reviews, and creating and implementing development plans while conforming to policies and other internal procedures.
  • Ability to decipher complex accounts and apply sound underwriting principles and effectively translate business rationale to the team.
  • Evaluate and identify technical training needs and opportunities to enhance the capabilities of team. Conduct formal/informal training sessions. Ongoing coaching of team members to drive underwriting excellence.
  • Handles underwriter account referrals and offers constructive feedback to facilitate underwriter development.  
  • Accountable for monitoring the Underwriting teams’ performance through file audits, financial activity analysis, ad hoc reports, Broker feedback, and other methods. Provide feedback and coaching and take appropriate action.
  • Partners with leadership to help develop E&S casualty business strategies. Collaborate with the underwriting team to review territories, distribution focus, and drive the strategy by territory.
  • Oversee the operational and technical work of the team and where applicable implement Underwriting best practices to coordinate consistent casualty book management.
  • Engage with the Product Development and Claims teams to review and assess existing coverage forms and endorsements, propose new coverages and endorsements, and identify opportunities for expansion into new coverage lines and/or classes of business.
  • Serves as subject matter expert for ensuring effective communication of underwriting philosophy, quality expectations and mix of business for various sectors.
  • Assist in developing strategic financial plans and adjusting as needed in response to changing performance indicators. Understands the financial relationships, dependencies, trends, risks, and potential returns associated with managing the casualty portfolio.

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; professional designations preferred.
  • P &C - minimum of 7+ years of experience underwriting E&S casualty accounts and driving broker relationships that result in profitable new and renewal business.
  • 3+ years demonstrated success directly managing or leading others preferred.
  • Manage day to day operations of underwriting teams to achieve business objectives. 
  • Effective problem solver who anticipates issues and seeks out and analyzes information collaboratively to propose solutions. Takes ownership for a successful resolution.
  • Acts as a change advocate, is open to new and different ways of thinking, and effectively leads a team to do the same.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential, effective face-to-face interactions and presentations to groups, as well as strong phone skills, sound written communication, and diligent follow through.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate and influence across multiple levels of the organization.
  • High degree of industry knowledge and strong broker relationships.  
  • Up to 25% travel required.
