Yard Supervisor

The Yard Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Kamloops production yard, ensuring that the facility meets Stella-Jones’ production goals and quality assurance requirements in a safe and efficient manner.  

 

Supervises Pole Yard Operations

  • Provides scheduling, direction and supervision of all yard employees in their daily tasks
  • Regularly and on an ongoing basis reviews and evaluates performance, skill levels and training needs of all yard employees
  • Manages all independent contractors hired to carry out specific functions within the yard
  • Assists with preparation and periodic updates of the annual production budget.

 

Operational Accountability

  • Manages wood flow through the facility, from incoming raw materials to outbound finished poles
  • Ensures production, budgeted costs and productivity targets are met
  • Manages all parts and supplies necessary for yard operation
  • Organizes and supervises the annual inventory count
  • Manages the preventative maintenance program on all mobile and stationary equipment

Human Resources

  • Hires yard employees, in consultation with the Regional Production Manager, as required
  • Manages all labour issues relative to the yard employees in consultation with the Regional Production Manager.
  • Approves and manages vacation requests from yard employees, ensuring consistent operation of the facility

 

Reports and Documentation

  • Prepares quotes on capital projects
  • Conducts and completes Quality Control audits and ensures adherence to Stella-Jones’ finished product specifications
  • Develops structured training programs for all yard employees
  • Ensures compliance with Stella-Jones’ Safety Program
  • Oversees the development of “Safe Work Procedures” and “Work Instructions”
  • Prepares Accident Investigation Reports
  • Signs off time sheets for yard employees and independent contractors
  • Prepares personal expense invoices with support documentation

 

Special Projects

  • Supervises capital projects
  • Participates in special projects as directed

Internal Relationships

  • Communicates regularly with:
    • Regional Production Manager, accounting, procurement, operations and logistics staff to ensure reporting, organizational, system requirement and other issues are dealt with promptly and efficiently
    • Stella-Jones’ Sr. Management, Quality assurance personnel and Human Resources Department
  •  Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Supervisory experience in the wood processing industry preferred.
  • WHMIS Certificate
  • First Aid (Level 1 minimum)
  • Chainsaw experience, a thorough understanding of the CSA/ANSI Pole Specifications and a background in WCB Claims Management an asset
  • Mechanical aptitude and preventative maintenance experience an asset
  • Mobile equipment operational or equivalent experience an asset
  • Ability to:
    • Train, motivate and coach employees
    • Maintain composure and work effectively under pressure
    • Take direction
    • Manage time efficiently
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all seasons
