Job Summary
Responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to all patients as directed by their supervising registered professional nurse, and medical staff and in compliance with hospital policies.  Compliments the registered nurse’s role in the administration of intravenous therapy. Relates and communicates effectively with other shifts for continuity of care.  Maintains satisfactory relationships and positive communication with other departments.  Participates in all phases of education, maintenance of records, and updating of skills.

Essential Functions
A. Responsible for providing a suitable environment for patients. Administers first aid during emergencies. Follows the instructions issued by a physician and or registered nurse.  
B. Give individualized nursing care which includes meeting the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of the patient. 
C. Observe and report changes in the patient’s condition to the Registered nurse on duty.  
D. Assist in patient education and rehabilitation.
E. Promote the concepts of team nursing and total patient care and functions efficiently as a team member. 
F. Maintain accurate records reflecting patient condition, treatments and teaching. 
G. Participate in educational programs to improve skills and contributes to the improvements of nursing care.
H. Keep informed of, and abides by, hospital policies and procedures.
I. Accurately prepare and administer (oral, intramuscular and/or subcutaneous) all allowed medications according to the policy of Administering Medications. 
J. Assist in the orientation of new personnel.
K. Perform certain diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which may safely delegated by the registered professional nurse.
L. Practice good phone skills.
M. Is readily available to patients, family and physicians for consultation and assistance.
N. Maintain quality patient care; exhibits compliance with physician orders and hospital policies.
O. Maintain patient confidentiality.
P. Maintain close communication with members of the medical care team in all matters relating to patient care.
Q. Participate in orientation, in-services, training and hospital safety programs.
R. Participate in all required certifications.
S. Insure that electronic medical records of patients accurately reflect the patient’s condition, progress, education and treatment.
T. Is prompt and efficient with minimal absences.
U. Communicate and enforce hospital policies and procedures to the medical care team, patients and visitors as needed.
V. Has the ability to be resourceful and calm in an emergency.   
W. Utilize all available resources efficiently.
X. Assess patient’s need through both direct and indirect interactions with the patient and /or family.
Y. Possess knowledge of the equipment needed in certain situations and how the equipment functions.
Z. Promote good public and intra-hospital relations.
AA. Review all nursing responsibilities in the Incident Action Plan manual for Emergency and Code situations.  Hold fellow nursing staff members responsible to know, understand, and practice their role in the event of a code or an emergency.
BB. Treat all patients equally with respect and dignity; do not base the quality of care on the patient’s race, creed, color or social position.
CC. Knows universal precautions and infection control policies; implements, supports, and enforces policies with self, patient, medical care team, visitors, and fellow staff members.
DD. Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations; call for assistance from health care support personnel.
EE. Ambulance transfers as needed.  
FF. Work in the Nursery and Delivery as directed by the RN. 
GG. When under the direct supervision of an RN or licensed practitioner, an LPN-C may perform these activities for an adult client:

     1. Infuse intravenous fluids and administer approved medications into a continuous flow central line;  
     2. Administer an initial dose of approved medications as described in 172 Nebraska Administrative Code (NAC) 102-003;
     3. Perform venipuncture in the hand, forearm, antecubital fossa area, and/or upper arm with a device three inches in length or less.  This can be done after an RN performs a face-to-face assessment;
     4. Administer approved medication by approved methods;
     5. Administer pain medications through a patient-controlled administration pump, cassette, or syringe as long as they have been commercially prepared, or prepared by a pharmacist, physician, or registered nurse; 
     6. Reinsert, convert, and flush peripheral intermittent infusion devices.
HH. When under the direction of an RN or licensed practitioner, an LPN-C may perform these activities for a pediatric client:
     1. Administer pain medications through a patient-controlled administration pump if the medication has been commercially prepared, or prepared by a pharmacist, physician, or registered nurse;
     2. Flush a peripheral intermittent infusion device.
II. Approved Medications do not include:
     1. Blood and blood products;
     2. Antineoplastic agents;
     3. Oxytocics;
     4. Anti-arrhythmics; and
     5. Hyperalimentation.
JJ. Perform other related functions as deemed necessary.
KK. Attends/participates in department meetings, in-services, and/or seminars. Attends/participates in 100% of mandatory meetings. Completion of Care Learning on time.
LL. Regular attendance at the assigned work location is an essential function of the job.

Qualifications
A. Education/Experience
     1. Completion of a state-approved course of study for practical nurse education. 
     2. Theoretical instruction combined with clinical experience. If has past work history, must be able to furnish satisfactory references from the last employer or vocational school from which graduated. 
     3. Must have an active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the State of Nebraska. 
     4. Must possess an active Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate. 
     5. Must have 5 hours of continuing education related to "IV" and "NG tube" therapy. The 5 contact hours may be included in the 20 contact hours needed to renew the LPN license.
