Position: Legal Assistant

 

Hours of Work:

 

Monday through Friday: 8:30AM-5:00PM

 

Full-Time, Non-exempt

 

To the extent permitted by law, the Company may, in its sole discretion, change the work schedule to address business needs. Work hours will depend on the business hours of the time zone serviced.

 

In This Role, You Will…

Perform as an Administrative Assistant in our Legal Collections department by supporting our branch locations and our in-house collection attorney with activity on accounts needing collections. You will work directly with employees at our branches and the collection attorney to collect information on open and charged-off accounts, and ensure prompt follow-up of legal collection activity.

 

Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

  • Prepare, maintain, and update legal files for Central Collection Office, including preparation of basic legal documents for filing and collection efforts.
  • Work within collection system to provide daily communications with branch employees, delinquent debtors, their representatives, and agents/attorneys.
  • Communicate and coordinate collection of delinquent accounts through third-party service providers, including process servers.
  • Obtain and compile all relevant documents to assist in the collection of delinquent accounts.
  • Prepare files for litigation and assists collection attorney in preparation for litigation.
  • Perform basic legal research and preparation of advisory memoranda for collection attorney.
  • Maintain and update effective calendar and organization methods for collection of delinquent accounts.
  • Prepare and mail out statutory notices, demand letters (via certified mail), and follow up to ensure delivery of them to the intended party.
  • Act in compliance with all relevant laws, and company policy and procedures, to prevent or limit losses to the company on collection accounts; cooperate with the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness, e.g. Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act, etc.
  • Strictly comply with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Maryland Debt Collection Act, Privacy provisions of the federal and state laws, Confidential Financial Record law of the State of Maryland.
  • Coordinate specific work tasks with other personnel within the department as well as with other departments in order to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information.
  • Report pertinent information to the immediate supervisor as requested or according to an established schedule; compile information as necessary or as directed and provide data to appropriate bank personnel.
  • Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job but which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances.
  • May perform additional functions depending on market demand and staffing in order to provide consistent quality customer service.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in related position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with vendors, service dealers, customers, and all levels of company staff. 
  • Excellent oral, written, verbal, and organization skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to be flexible and pivot among responsibilities while maintaining high-quality work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  •  Some college coursework preferred. Participant in or graduate of an accredited Paralegal program.

 

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to move about. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty (20) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Compensation: Hourly Rate (commensurate with experience)
