OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

A Data Architect designs the structure and organization of an organization's data assets. They define data models, data integration strategies, and ensure data governance and security. Data Architects may also work on big data and analytics projects.

 

WHAT SKILLS YOU’LL NEED TO DO THE JOB:

  • Data Modeling: Data architects possess expertise in data modeling techniques and tools. They can design conceptual, logical, and physical data models that capture the structure, relationships, and attributes of data entities.
  •  Database Management Systems: They have a deep understanding of various database management systems (DBMS) such as relational databases (e.g., Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server) or NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra). Data architects are proficient in database design, indexing, partitioning, and query optimization.
  •  Data Integration: They have knowledge of data integration techniques, including Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes, data replication, and real-time data streaming. Data architects design integration strategies to enable seamless data flow between different systems and databases.
  •  Data Governance: Data architects establish and enforce data governance policies and standards. They define data quality rules, data classification, access controls, and privacy requirements. Data architects collaborate with stakeholders to ensure compliance with data regulations and industry best practices.
  •  Data Security: They possess expertise in data security principles and practices. Data architects design secure data architectures, including encryption, access controls, and data masking techniques, to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access and breaches.
  • Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence: They understand data warehousing concepts and methodologies. Data architects design data warehouse architectures that support business intelligence and reporting requirements. They are familiar with data modeling for dimensional modeling and OLAP (Online Analytical Processing).
  • Big Data Technologies: Data architects have knowledge of big data technologies such as Hadoop, Apache Spark, and distributed computing frameworks. They understand the concepts of data lakes, data streaming, and processing large volumes of data efficiently.
  • Data Analytics and Machine Learning: They understand data analytics and machine learning concepts. Data architects can design data architectures that enable advanced analytics and machine learning capabilities, including data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model deployment.
  • Data Migration and Conversion: Data architects are skilled in data migration strategies, including migrating data from legacy systems to modern platforms. They ensure data integrity, consistency, and minimal disruption during data migration and conversion processes.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Data architects work closely with various stakeholders, including data analysts, data scientists, business leaders, and IT teams. They possess strong communication and collaboration skills to understand requirements, explain technical concepts, and align data architecture solutions with business needs

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS YOU’LL NEED TO DO THE JOB:

  • Must have 10+ years of experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Experience with a diagram framework (UML, BPMN2, other)
  • Specific experience as a client facing consultant preferred.
  • CDMP, CBIP, or other relevant certifications preferred.
  • Public sector experience is considered an asset.
  • Cloud experience is considered an asset.
