Workshop - Turbomachinery Specialist

 

Summary: Responsible for repair, installation, adjustment or maintaining industrial production and processing machinery for power generation, processing industry, oil and gas industry, petrochemical, refinery and pipeline distribution systems. This includes but is not limited to MAN Energy Solutions OEM equipment, third party equipment( OMNICARE), steam turbines, gas turbines, pumps, gearboxes, compressors and other rotating equipment.

Key Job Responsibilities:

 

 

  • Technically Coordinate and  scheduling shop personnel for optimal day-to-day operational needs. Support and execute  key and/or large repair projects.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and coaching/development for all employees within the shop.
  • Work with Shop Manager and Engineers to ensure work is completed per specs.
  • Hands on service type of work on all turbomachinery as needed.
  • On Call type of responsibility  position  24/7 as needed .
  • Filling out tech reports.
  • Recommending repair options
  • Making decision on the floor to execute nonstandard procedures
  • Repair and maintain the operating condition of power generation, industrial production and processing machinery and equipment.
  • Create detailed maintenance and inspection records documenting work performed.
  • Read and interpret assembly blueprints and specifications manuals, and plan assembly or building operations.
  • Verify conformance of parts to stock lists and blueprints, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauges, and micrometers.  Monitor the feed and speed of machine tools during the machining process.
  • Repair and maintain the operating condition of industrial production and processing machinery and equipment..
  • Measure, examine, and test completed pieces to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments.
  • Analyze and interpret blueprints, data, manuals, and other materials to determine specifications, inspection and testing procedures, adjustment and certification methods, formulas, and measuring instruments required.
  • Notify supervisors and other personnel of production problems, and assist in identifying and correcting these problems.
  • Discuss inspection results with Technical advisors, management and/or customer representatives responsible for the equipment or parts, and recommend necessary corrective actions.
  • Record and analyze inspection and test data, such as weights, temperatures, grades, or moisture content, and quantities inspected or graded as necessary to determine test results of the customers equipment. Measure dimensions of customer equipment and/or spare parts to verify conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as rulers, calipers, gauges, or micrometers.
  • Mark items with details such as grade and acceptance or rejection status.
  • Observe and monitor production operations and equipment to ensure conformance to specifications and order or create necessary processes or assembly adjustments as needed.
  • Assist management with shop floor supervision.

 

 

  • Support/Conduct root cause analysis and follow up related to non-conformities.
  • Ability to write routine finding reports with photographs built in.    
  • Able to develop, write, and rework procedures for process improvement, follow up with group or individual training in the procedures.  Maintain access to OEM drawings and specifications.
  • Execute project management duties as requested. Duties may include but not limited to; planning, issuing GANTT charts, PRF and MAN- client liaison.  Identify shop improvements and generate fixed asset requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Disassemble machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs.
  • Repair and replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery and equipment.
  • Repair and maintain the operating condition of power generation, industrial production and processing machinery and equipment.
  • Examine parts for defects such as breakage and excessive wear.
  • Reassemble equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  • Observe and test the operation of machinery and equipment in order to diagnose malfunctions, using voltmeters and other testing devices.
  • Clean, lubricate, and adjust parts, equipment, and machinery.
  • Analyze test results obtained from operators in order to diagnose equipment problems.
  • Record repairs and maintenance performed.
  • Inspect, and test completed products to verify functioning, machine capabilities, and conformance to customer specifications.
  • Position and align components for assembly, manually or using hoists.
  • Set and verify parts clearances.
  • Rework, repair, and replace damaged parts or assemblies.
  • Read and interpret assembly blueprints and specifications manuals, and plan assembly or building operations.
  • Verify conformance of parts to stock lists and blueprints, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauges, and micrometers.
  • Drive forklifts safely in order to maneuver parts or equipment as needed.
  • Operate overhead and jib cranes safely to maneuver parts or equipment as needed.

 

 

 

Required Education:

Associate’s Degree from a 2-year college in a Mechanical field is preferred but not required. High school diploma or equivalent with four to 15  years related experience and/or training.

 

Required Experience:

Minimum 15 years' experience in hands-on turbomachinery service

Solid knowledge and use of precision measuring tools, Materials and Safety, Job Planning, Rotating Equipment Mechanical.

Experience with disassembling and reassembling complex assemblies as the project lead, understand equipment operational requirements, training in crane and rigging and heavy lift procedures.

 

Desired Experience: 

  • Dry Gas Seals  ( DGS) installation.
  • Bearing installation, rotor centralization and bearing strap crush
  • Rotors axial positioning. Hydraulic Fit components installation
  • Basic Welding skills
  • Capable to estimate and schedule turbomachinery type of service work
  • Able to run basic math calculations
  • Experienced Shift / Team technical lead.
  • Mechanical and thermodynamic aptitude to be able to work on rotating equipment including but not limited to screw compressors, axial flow comp, centrifugal comp, barrel comp, expanders, steam turbines and companders. 
  • Ability to read and understand drawings, technical documentation, blueprints, layouts and precision measuring equipment such as O.D. / I.D. micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, scales, 
  • Ability to document job activities in written inspection reports.
  • Good communication skills. Profound knowledge of the English language, verbal and written.
  • Possess a sufficient quantity of professional hand tools to adequately perform daily assignments.

 

Required 3rd party Certifications/Qualifications: Rotor Balancing Cert. ( Desired). DGS ( Desired)

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak and write in English is required. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Requirements:

The majority of the time of this position requires being in one place for several hours to hold and maneuvering parts and/or equipment, and reaching to maneuver parts and/or equipment. Accessing platforms to handle or maneuver parts and/or equipment. This position mostly uses close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less). Able to lift 50 pounds. May be required to assist with other jobs which would involve accessing and working in small spaces. May be required to work in adverse working environment including but not limited to intense heat, cold, windy, dusty and dirty conditions. This position also deals with loud noise (grinders, drills, hammers, etc.).
