ROLE PURPOSE
The Cook is responsible for food preparation, finishing and serving of meals, maintaining clean and orderly working areas, participating in the development of menu plans, and assisting with inventory control and ordering of supplies.

LOCATION
Vancouver, British Columbia.

STATUS AND CLASSIFICATION

Union. This position is open to applicants of all genders.

HOURS 

  • 40 hours per week; Sunday to Thursday, 0830 - 1630
  •  40 hours per week; Tuesday to Saturday, 1200 - 2000
  • 32 hours per week; Friday and Saturday, 0830 - 1630, Sunday and Monday, 1200 - 2000

REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports and is accountable to the Program Manager of the facility or their designate
  • Participates actively in house, staff, and staff/resident meetings
  • Participates as a member of the Connective staff team
  • Liaises with outside professionals from other agencies or government bodies as required

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Prepares, cooks and serves meals and snacks, including those for special dietary needs and special occasions in accordance with health and safety standards and the menu plan
  • Maintains the cleanliness and safety of work areas, storage, coolers, freezers, equipment, and work surfaces to a standard that meets all regulatory standards
  • Participates in the development of a menu plan in accordance with dietary requirements of licensing bodies and individual dietary needs of residents
  • Establishes, implements and communicates menu recipe requirements and instructions 
  • Ensures the safe storage, handling and disposal of food and beverages
  • Safely and efficiently operates all equipment associated with the duties of the position
  • Attends staff in-service and continuing education opportunities provided by the Employer
  • Reports any situations that may be considered unsafe or a health risk
  • Notifies management of any repairs or maintenance required for kitchen appliances and equipment
  • Maintains an inventory management system for food and related supplies
  • Purchases and orders food items necessary for the preparation of meals. Ensures that purchases are within approved budget limits
  • Maintains an inventory of food and other related items. Stores food items
  • Provides kitchen orientation and meal preparation instruction to staff assisting with kitchen duties, including safe food handling and preparation
  • Other duties shall be assigned as required.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Function independently, while remaining a crucial member of the support team
  • Adhere to Connective policies and procedures
  • Be available to work flexible hours as needed. May include some evenings/weekends, as determined by the regional office needs and schedules
  • Is a member of CUPE local 1936-11

 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • One year of experience cooking in a commercial kitchen and/or in a residential program preparing large quantity meals
  • An understanding of support and service provision to people with diverse needs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others/within a team environment
  • Good written and verbal communication skills

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

The physical requirements outlined below are non-specific to the position, as such, there may be additional tasks required. Reasonable accommodations will be made for qualified individuals with disabilities though our accommodation process.

  • Ability to walk up and down stairs
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to move items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to perform First Aid, CPR, and Naloxone administration
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
  • Ability to complete general housekeeping duties (i.e., sweeping, mopping, wiping areas, laundry, changing light bulbs)

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to successfully complete a Criminal Records Check for the vulnerable sector
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certificate
  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination
  • Food Safe Certificate (Level 1 and Level 2)


COMPENSATION
As Connective is a unionized environment, the starting wage is $24.56 per hour (plus 5% in lieu of statutory holiday pay for Part-Time employees, 10.6% in lieu of vacation pay and benefits for casual employees). The wage will increase with every 2,000 hours worked up to a maximum of $28.16 per hour (plus 5% in lieu of statutory holiday pay for Part-Time employees, 10.6% in lieu of vacation pay and benefits for casual employees).

Important: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, observe their weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa, and provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.
