Position: Insolvency Counsellor

Location: Downtown, Calgary or Remote

Type: Permanent, Full Time

Reports To: VP, Insolvency  + Compliance

 

The Position

 

The Insolvency Counsellor supports our clients in their financial recovery by assessing their needs and providing tools and knowledge. The Insolvency Counsellor is responsible for meeting with clients to provide insolvency counseling as mandated by the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA).

 

Key Accountabilities

 

Insolvency Counselling:

  • Develops a comfortable conversation and trust with client through phone and video counselling sessions.
  • Provides financial counselling to assist in the clients’ rehabilitation in accordance with the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA).
  • Evaluates clients’ needs and assists clients to understand and overcome financial challenges.
  • Conducts first meeting with client to counsel on money management, spending and shopping habits, warning signs of financial difficulty.
  • Conducts second meeting with client to counsel on setting financial goals, obtaining and using credit and rebuilding credit and review non budgetary causes of financial difficulties.
  • Assists clients through difficult life events by referring clients to outside agencies or resources, as needed.
  • Handles a challenging workload of at least 8 counselling sessions each day.
  • Responsible for booking 2nd counselling session with all clients.
  • E-filing of all required documentation in a timely manner.

 

Compliance:

  • Ensures adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Ensures alignment to internal administration processes, documentation, and decision-making.
  • Ensures compliance to ethical and professional requirements as per Office of the Superintendent Bankruptcy of Canada (OSB) and the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (CAIRP).

 

People Relationships:

  • Provides counseling in all provinces serviced by BSI
  • Models and promotes BSI’s organizational culture, purpose, and values.
  • Champions and fosters a climate of diversity and inclusion.
  • Uses individual and team efforts to manage and improve internal and external relationships.          
  • Works with a team of dedicated individuals, independently and collaboratively.

 

Education, Knowledge & Skills:

  • High School or Post Graduate diploma

Be recognized as a qualified BIA Insolvency Counsellor

  • Two to three years of experience as Insolvency Counsellor
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite along with a strong aptitude for learning new computer programs.
  • Working knowledge and experience with Insolvency software, and insolvency procedures
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
